HISTORY
Historical and Cultural Background of Ponso South Elementary School
It was barely sixty one years ago, when a school was opened in Ponso. This school was located along the National Road. The year was 1935. It was just a primary school headed by the late Mr. Valentin Mape. When World War II broke out, the school was closed temporarily. It was reopened in 1947 under the supervision of a head teacher named Laureno Ronda. He remained as a Head Teacher until 1952.
In 1950, a civic-minded person, Mr. Domingo Sambitan Sr., donated a 27, 000 m2 lot in Matamis. Part of said lot was also donated by a generous man Mr. Supremo Campo. Another school was opened then in Matamis Street. It was called Ponso Elem. School Site II. The primary classes were held in Site I and the intermediate grades hold classes in Site II. Administering two schools became a herculean task for a head teacher, so the Schools Superintendent deemed better to divide the schools under the supervision of two principals. Thus, Ponso North and Ponso South Elementary School came about. Both schools had complete elementary grades due to increase in school population. It was in 1952 when Ponso South Elementary school started to function independently under Mr. Mauricio Casimiro, the school principal.

Looking back at the line of school administrators after Mrs. Gloia Sangreo’s retirement, the Schools District Supervisor appointed Mrs. Ma. Nila O. Silo as the School Officer-in-charge. Her term of office was short yet she showed her potentials as a competent school administrator. She hold that position from February 7, 1995 ~ July 7, 1995.
For more than half a century of existence, Ponso South and Ponso North Elementary Schools have produced countless professionals and successful in their own field of endeavours. It has also maintained its prestige as one of the best schools in the district. Through the collaborative efforts and ingenuity of the of the school principals assigned in this school, the parents, some civic spirited citizens and the teachers, many tangible improvements and projects were put up. To name a few there’s a big and permanent stage located in front of the U-Shape buildings, concrete fencing of the school perimeter, P.E. apparatuses, wide and well-trimmed lawns, and concrete tables and benches along the lanes.
Academically speaking, Ponso South Elem. School has numerous educational facilities to enhance good learning. It is equipped with a library with volumes of Encyclopedia and reference books, a functional clinic, a well furnished principals office, a general services building and a sound system. All of these are made possible through the able management of DepEd Officials and the good people of Ponso.
